History

The Corio Centre was founded in 1966 and was the 7th centre of the Victorian Little Athletics Association, acknowledged by the number 7 in our logo.

Structure of Little Athletics

Affiliation

Corio Little Athletics Centre is proudly affiliated with Little Athletics Victoria (LAVic), which is affiliated with Little Athletics Australia along with 6 other states/territories; Capital Athletics, Little Athletics NSW, Little Athletics Queensland, Little Athletics SA, Little Athletics Tasmania and Athletics West. Together, these organisations support young athletes from local centres to state and national levels.

👟 Corio Centre

Corio LAC provides local children with weekly athletics meets, skill development, and fun, inclusive competition for all abilities.

📌 Western Metro Region

Corio is in the Western Metro Region along with 10 other centres; Altona, Bacchus Marsh, Brimbank, Geelong, Gisborne, Melton City, South Melbourne Districts, Surf Coast, Werribee and Williamstown. Each Region holds summer and winter Region based competitions.

📍 State (LAVic)

Victoria is divided into 7 Regions. Eastern Metro, Gippsland Country, Northern Country, Northern Metro, Southern Metro, Western Country and Western Metro. Little Athletics Victoria holds summer and winter State level competitions.

🏆 National (LAA)

Little Athletics Australia oversees the sport nationally, in partnership with all state bodies including Victoria, NSW, Queensland, and more.

2024-25 LITTLE ATHLETICS VICTORIA SERVICE AWARDS

As part of Little Athletics Victoria’s 60 year celebrations, they introduced long term service awards,
and Corio was very proud to have 2 Life Members awarded;

Graham Cole receiving LAV length of service recognition

Graham Cole attended the LAVs Gala Awards dinner to receive his award.

Graham joined Corio in 1992 and had 4 children do little aths. Graham has held several executive positions, most recently and for a considerable number of years, as our Records and Rankings Officer and Chief Time Keeper.

He is also a Western Metro Region Life Member and has assisted at WMR and State little athletics events since the early 2000’s.

Graham planned to retire from our Centre at the end of 2023-24 after giving 32 years service, but ended up returning for 2024-25 and 2025-26.

Barb Fairbrother receiving LAV length of service recognition

Barb Fairbrother visited our Centre to receive her award.

Barb has been a well loved member of our Centre for over 50years, beginning as a club team manager in the early 1970s while her 5 children did little aths and now has a grandson at our Centre.

Barb was our back straight recorder for many years, stepping back from an active role 2 years ago but comes to visit on special occasions.
